OPEN SPACE HEATING SYSTEM Safety and comfort all winter-long.

OPEN-AIR HEATING SYSTEMS ENSURE SAFETY.

ETHERMA open-air heating systems ensure safety - by preventing accidents and falls on slippery stairs, pathways, roadways, access roads and garage driveways. What would happen if rescue helicopters could not land on icy landing pads, or if access routes to hospitals were not safe to use? Reliability is the keyword - and this is where ETHERMA open-air heating systems come into play.

GREATER COMFORT – ENJOY WINTER.

Enjoy winter! In public areas, open-air heating systems are by and large compulsory - in private areas, open-air heating ensures not only safety, but also a great deal of comfort. Thanks to the ETHERMA product palette, you can spend winter on the ski piste or in comfort in front of the fireplace - annoying early-morning snow clearing is a thing of the past. We will be glad to help you with planning.

FAST MELTING RESPONSE.

Electric power is unrivalled for defrosting when it comes to heating open areas. Compared to liquid-conducting systems (such as warm-water open-air heating), electric open-air heating systems feature a significantly simpler construction design, and, best of all, a much faster heating response. The reason is obvious - no medium (e.g. water) needs to be heated up beforehand, as electric open-air heating has a direct effect.

CLEVER AND FULLY AUTOMATED CONTROL.

Purchasing and operating costs are always an issue. Efficient open-air heating systems heat only when the temperature is low enough, and from certain humidity levels. This means that the heating stays off in dry cold spells, as well as during rainfall at sufficiently high temperatures. In this way, you can heat efficiently with a full-automated control system which simultaneously monitors temperature and humidity.

SUITABLE FOR EVERY SURFACE.

ETHERMA open-air heating systems can be installed on almost any floor surface, including concrete screed, concrete monolith, rolled and mastic asphalt, under plates in sand, grit or gravel as well as in tiling adhesives and in plastic linings. Where only low installation heights are possible, installation is recommended in mastic asphalt, in tiling adhesive or in epoxy resin coatings during renovation. ETHERMA open-air heating systems are characterised by their fast, easy installation. This saves on costs.

THE CRITERIA

Two criteria in particular must be kept in mind during planning:

  • The build-up of slippery surfaces must be prevented - immediately and reliably

  • The installation depth (and hence the subsequently required operating hours) must be kept at minimal levels

SAFETY IN ANY WEATHER

In addition to "normal" winter weather, an open-air heating system must also withstand so-called "weather mishaps":

  • Ice rain - When it rains onto the cold lining material after a cold front

  • Temperature drops - The spontaneous arrival of cold air which strikes the wet lining material

  • Snow attack - Extremely heavy snowfall in a short time

SHALLOW INSTALLATION DEPTHS – SAFER AND MORE EFFICIENT

There is a proportional relationship between the installation depth of the heat conductors, heating response and operating costs. The deeper the heat conductors are embedded, the longer the heating-up time until the defrosting surface temperature of +3°C is reached. Installation close to the surface is therefore essential, for safety reasons as well as for reduced operating costs.

THE RIGHT LINING MATERIAL CAN SAVE COSTS

This graphic shows the relationship between heating response and installation depth - the deeper the heat conductors are embedded, the longer the heating response. Selecting the lining material, which determines the installation depth, should therefore take into account safety and operating costs.

WHAT ARE YOU HEATING?

Depending on the application, the entire surface can be heated, as is usually required in public areas, or limited to keeping a pathway clear, as is often sufficient in private use, thus saving on purchase and investment costs.

SURFACE MATERIAL

Open-air heating system is based on the radiant heating principle. Consequently, the surface material and its emissions level have a decisive impact on the effectiveness of the heating system.

INTELLIGENT CONTROL SYSTEM

An intelligent open-area control system determines the temperature and humidity of the surface - it draws the right conclusion from these, and hence ensures a fully-automated, safe and operating cost-optimised use of the system. The sensor determines the current temperature and the incipient snowfall. In order for the heating system to switch on, the temperature must be lower than the set value, while the humidity level must also be above its own set value. This way you save on operating costs.

CASE STUDIES

SHOPPING CENTRE, SALZBURG PARKING BUILDING OPEN-AIR HEATING SYSTEM, NEW-BUILD

THE INITIAL SITUATION

During the construction of a new shopping centre in Salzburg, the focus was on open architecture - even in the car park. As a result, the entrance and exit routes to the parking garage were prone to ice and snow build-ups in winter. An ETHERMA open-air heating system should provide some assistance.

THE ETHERMA SOLUTION

The angle of incline of the entrance and exit routes posed an enormous challenge - which is why a special lining was developed for mounting the heating mats, so that the mats would not slip when applying the mastic asphalt. A further core component of this complete solution was the humidity and temperature-dependent control system. This thus ensures safe operation and saves energy.

PRIVATE HOME, BÜCKEBURG OPEN-AIR HEATING SYSTEM FOR ACCESS DRIVEWAY, RENOVATION

THE INITIAL SITUATION

The concrete garage driveway of the family home had begun to show its age, and its surfaces needed renewal. Permanent snow clearing and the use of gritting salt would give way to a fully-automated open-air heating system, and the driveway needed to remain reliably free from snow and ice.

THE ETHERMA SOLUTION

In this case, the renovation needed to be completed within shortest possible time and minimal structural changes. After pre-treating the old concrete base layer, NST netted heating mats were laid according to a bespoke plan. Approx. 40 m² of ramp were completely renovated in only 24 hours. The mere 25 mm thin overall thickness ensures a particularly fast heating response - which saves energy, and money.
