HOW DOES INFRARED HEATING WORK?
Infrared heating systems use the principle of radiant warmth. These generate infrared radiation directly on the heating panel from the electrical energy supply from the mains socket. As soon as this radiation comes into contact with solid materials such as furniture, ceilings or even human beings, it transforms into comfortable warmth. The heat energy absorbed in this way is transferred into the objects and the inhabitants in the living area. This is the decisive difference between infrared heating and the heat generated by traditional convection heating bodies. The latter warm the ambient air in the living area. As warm air rises due to the effects of physics, the ceiling of the room receives a lot of warmth. Floors and corners receive very little warmth, as the hot air loses energy as it sinks. House owners often still feel cold drafts even though the heating is turned up.
The radiant warmth of an infrared heating system, on the other hand, provides a comfortable, evenly distributed temperature throughout the entire living area. With their comfort diagram, Bedford and Liese have shown that the comfortable room climate provided by infrared heating allows a drop of around two degrees in the room temperature while maintaining the same level of comfort. The ambient temperature can therefore be reduced without any effect on comfort, and every degree lower means reduced heating costs.
WHAT SHOULD I BEAR IN MIND WHEN BUYING?
Very often, price is a deciding criterion when purchasing an infrared heating system. But the quality of radiant heating is much more important than its purchase cost. This is because this has a long-term effect on energy consumption and the cost of heating. The checklist below shows the criteria which consumers should use to recognise a high-quality heat radiator.
LOWER HEAT REQUIREMENT.
Compared to other heaters, infrared heating systems have a high end-energy efficiency. This is because they generate the required warmth directly where they are installed. An infrared heating system suffers none of the heat loss in water-borne heating systems while transferring the warm heating water from the boiler through the pipes to the radiators. Thanks to this improved use of heat energy, radiation heaters provide a permanent reduction in heating costs.
The direct heat radiation from infrared heating means that inhabitants believe that the room temperature is 2-3 degrees warmer than it actually is. As a result, infrared heating requires less heat output than other heating systems, while at the same time also ensuring shorter heating-up times. This offers the consumer not only fuel savings, but also the possibility of more sustainable, intelligent heating. Each temperature degree lower means a reduction in energy consumption of approximately six percent.
IN COMBINATION WITH RENEWABLE ENERGIES.
Infrared heating systems can be coupled with photovoltaic systems on the roof. The required current is no longer taken from the mains socket, as the solar cells provide energy into the infrared heating system. Building owners have become independent of the public power supply, and operate their radiation heating with their own, more or less free ecologically friendly power from the roof. New buildings are subject to the German Renewable Energies Heat Act (EEWärmeG) with regard to building heating. This defines the proportion of renewable energy to be used in heat generation. This is where connecting the photovoltaic system to your infrared heating makes sense.
SHORT HEATING TIME - ONLY A FEW MINUTES.
Once the heating operator switches on the infrared heating, this will reach a temperature of approximately 60 degrees Celsius within 4 to 5 minutes. This thus enables a flexible, fast response to changing temperature settings. Despite this rapid warming-up phase, the intelligent technology prevents burns when coming into contact with the panels.
WHY RENOVATE USING INFRARED HEATING?
While modern gas heating or pump systems require the appropriate piping to transfer the hot water, infrared heaters only require access to a wall socket. Particularly in older buildings, which were heated without water-dependent heating systems, there are no heating pipes or heat circuit pumps, and these must be laid first. This construction expense is not needed for infrared heating, which allows fast, cost-effective and dust-free modernisation of the heating system.
Compared to infrared heating, the components of water-dependent heating systems respond slowly to changing temperatures, as the heating medium (water) must first be heated before it can distribute its pleasant warmth into the room. This process is not necessary with infrared heating.
OTHER AREAS OF APPLICATION.
In properly insulated buildings such as passive or energy-efficient housing, infrared heating is providing efficient, sole main heating. In less well insulated housing, radiation heaters in conservatories and bathrooms comprise an optimal addition to existing heating systems in the cellar.
