Roof areas and buildings become structurally overloaded due to the large amounts of snow involved, and can even collapse in the worst-case scenario. In this case, an individually designed roof heating system provides reliable protection. Every roof is different - which is why we offer a wide range of frost protection systems suited to roof designs, and the challenges that they pose. FAST MELTING RESPONSE.

Once a layer of snow has formed, this is difficult to melt. The heating system must be designed in such a way that the melting process starts immediately once snow starts to fall. The only way to do this is to ensure the right output and a perfect control system. The ETHERMA planning team will configure the heating system to your specific requirements.

CLEVER AND FULLY AUTOMATED CONTROL.

Efficient roof area heating heats only when the temperature is low enough, and from certain humidity levels. This means that the heating stays off in dry cold spells, as well as during rainfall at sufficiently high temperatures. In this way, you can heat efficiently with a full-automated control system which simultaneously monitors temperature and humidity.

PROTECTS THE STRUCTURE.

Large amounts of snow can overload roof areas, which can lead to damage to the building itself. Roof area heating is often the easiest solution without having to resort to expensive structural enhancements or other measures.

BE IT A PAVILION ROOF OR EXTENSION.

Extensions are primarily at risk from buckling due to large amounts of snow on critical points. Roof heating films melt this snow safely and reliably, and hence protect the roof as well as the structure of the building.

ETHERMA DSN – THE STITCHED HEATING MAT

The DSN heating mat consists of a fibre-glass armoured braid, onto which a 2-pole heat conductor with braided mesh and UV-resistant outer insulation is mounted. Our unique stitching technology with UV-resistant Teflon thread guarantees 100% smooth laying and heating mat stability. Here too, the perfect custom solution is prepared for you based on your individual requirements.

On certain specific roof geometries, ready-made heating systems cannot be used in certain cases - it is however still possible to freely lay heat conductors or heating strips in order to ensure the drainage of the melted water to the roof gutter and hence down the downpipe to the ground. The ETHERMA planning team will provide custom advice in these cases, and find the appropriate solution.

CASE STUDY

SEMBELLA PLANT, TIMELKAM ROOF AREA HEATING

THE INITIAL SITUATION

The Sembella plant in Timelkam features a particularly large flat roof area with a relatively "soft" surface. Snow can potentially "creep" under the roof, melt there and hence cause water damage to the interior of the building.

THE ETHERMA SOLUTION

In order to safely prevent water damage in the production areas, a web of ETHERMA DAB film heating mats was laid - these feature a particularly fast defrosting response, are very robust and their smooth surface also prevents the snow from accumulating. In addition, the relatively "soft" bitumen roof is not damaged due to any heat conductors which may be installed.

WIENERBERGER PLANT, STRAUBING ROOF AREA HEATING

THE INITIAL SITUATION

The Wienerberger plant has a large photovoltaic system, which causes heavy snow slides. This resulted in large accumulations of snow and hence occasional structural overloads. The insurance company was unwilling to pay for such damage, which meant that a solution needed to be found, and the snow removed from these areas. The custom ETHERMA heating solution guarantees the safe melting and final drainage of the water without any ice build-up, until it is drained into the soil.

THE ETHERMA SOLUTION

In order to prevent accumulations of snow, the surfaces of areas at risk were covered with custom-made DSN heating mats. These ensure even defrosting and thanks to their stitching technology with Teflon thread, are particularly robust and weather-resistant. The snow melted in this way is directed safely to the soil, thus ensuring that there is no further build-up of ice in the downpipes, as the water is kept warm thanks to the EGT-36 self-regulating heating strips.
